TPMS sensor installation

TPMS sensor replacement and installation.

TPMS sensors have a battery, and that battery is not replaceable — every sensor on the road is on a clock that runs out somewhere between five and ten years. When one dies, the fix is a new sensor, programmed and relearned. We do that where the vehicle is.

Detail

New sensors fitted, programmed and relearned to the right wheel position.

Sensor, valve and service kit

A sensor replacement is not just the sensor. The valve stem, the seal, the grommet and the nut are a service kit that gets replaced with it — reusing a ten-year-old seal on a new sensor is how a slow leak arrives a month later.

Programmed and relearned to position

A new sensor has to be programmed to the vehicle and relearned to the correct wheel position, or the system reports the front left as the spare and the light never clears. The relearn is part of the job here, not something you take somewhere else afterwards.

At a tire change is the cheap time

The tire is already off the rim, so the labour is nearly free. If a sensor is more than about six years old and the tire is coming off anyway, replacing it then costs a fraction of coming back for it on its own.

Commercial and passenger

Truck and trailer sensors, including the strap and valve-mounted types used on commercial wheels, and passenger and light truck sensors. Fleet-wide replacement across a row of trailers in one visit if the sensors went in at the same time — which, being the same age, is usually when they fail.

If it is not the sensor

Sometimes the sensor is fine and the receiver or the wiring is not. We diagnose first — see TPMS diagnostics — rather than selling you four sensors for a fault that is not there.

Questions

TPMS sensor installation — questions

How long do TPMS sensors last?

The battery is sealed into the sensor and typically lasts somewhere between five and ten years depending on how much the vehicle runs. It cannot be replaced on its own, so a dead battery means a new sensor.

Do new sensors need programming?

Yes. The sensor is programmed to the vehicle and relearned to its wheel position. Both are part of the job here.

Should I replace all of them at once?

If they went in together they will fail together, so on a fleet or a set that is the same age it is usually cheaper to do the set while the tires are off than to come back four times.

Which systems can you program?
